At Camp

Perched on top of a 200ft icefall, Whichaway camp is the first of its kind. The tents are heated and spacious, the views spectacular.

The camp has an easy and friendly feel to it, furnished in the old world opulence of African safaris. It is a temporary camp, dismantled each season to prevent any environmental damage and powered by solar panels.

The main living area comprises of three large, dome tents. These are unique - fusing traditional materials with cutting-edge technology - and inside, house a dining room, library, kitchen and communications area.

There are a further six sleeping tents, each one shared by two clients. These are stylish and cozy, and heated by their own stove. We also have a separate wash tent with a superb shower.

Our chef, Jenna Viney, is one of the very best in Cape Town, preparing delicious, fresh food three times a day. There is seafood and barbequed steaks, full English breakfasts and light lunches. Come the evening time, we take things easy and enjoy Champagne Mumm, whilst reminiscing about some of the day’s experiences.

In the evening, our field guides often give a slideshow presentation, where they cover topics from the local environment to the lesser-known stories of the early explorers. We regularly have scientists from the Russian and Indian base visit Whichaway, explaining elements of their latest, often groundbreaking research.

Once at our camp, the philosophy is simple - do as much or as little as you like.

Activities Around Camp

Each day, our field guides will suggest a number of excursions and activities for you to do. They can be easy and relaxing, or adrenalin charged... the choice is up to you. We insist on only a small number of clients at camp, so there are enough field guides to tailor each experience.

We go on gentle treks to the nearby oasis and explore ice caves and tunnels. Continuing further, you reach the massive ice disturbances on the coast and trekking across them is nothing less than surreal. We also go on walks to see the little Adelie penguins that nest on an island near our camp. The penguins themselves walk nearly 90km to get there from the open water!

There are picnics on the edge of one of the many lakes near our camp. From enjoying a glass of Champagne on the crest of a mountain, to visiting one of the local science bases, your experience at Whichaway is both unique and genuine.

For those wanting more activity, our expert guides will teach you the skills of a polar explorer. We do technical rock and ice climbing on the nearby Nunatak mountain along with abseils into open crevasses. Our philosophy is that it’s about doing whatever it is you want to do.

At White Desert we have a proud history of clients who have broken World records whilst at our camp. The first ever solo balloon flight in Antarctica took place in 2007, shortly followed by an expert cold water swimmer who managed to break the record for the most southerly swim. Others have summitted totally unclimbed peaks and we have even had BASE jumpers and para-gliders at camp!

We’re not expecting everyone to be so extreme, but with our guides at your side every step of the way (each of whom are experts in their field and all have their own world records) we can push you as far as you want to go.

During your time at Whichaway Camp, we’re there to help when needed or leave you in peace if you’d prefer. Our job is to ensure you are warm, safe and enjoying yourself.
