Expedition to the Mountains

Although no previous experience is required and you only need to be in normal physical shape to participate, the expedition to the mountains is geared more to those looking for adventure and a real taste of what its like to be on a polar expedition.

Boarding our 'turbo prop' DC3 plane, we fly across the mighty peaks of one of the least explored regions in all of Antarctica. From the windows of the plane, you see Antarctica’s sheer vastness unfold beneath you.

Destination: "Wolf's Fang" or "Ulvetanna" (as it was first named by the early Norwegian explorers) is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful mountains on earth.

Our Expedition camp has modern, high tech tents to sleep in and although more basic than Whichaway, it is still a comfortable and safe place to stay. When snow conditions allow, the more adventurous can spend a night in a beautifully sculpted igloo. It’s quite an experience to wake up in the morning with the soft blue light shining through a cocoon of ice.

The next day involves going out and exploring our surrounding region. From huge abseils, ice climbs and ski trips, we do it all. Weaving through the kilometer deep crevasses that roll out from the base of the mountains is a truly unforgettable experience. There is nowhere like it on earth.

On good wind days, we will also use our specialised kites, teaching you the basics of kite-skiing, the newest form of polar travel! Only a handful of people have ever kited in Antarctica and speeding across the snow with the kite effortlessly powering you along is a truly exceptional feeling.

This part of the trip is about experiencing the thrills of being a polar explorer, without having to ski the equivalent of a double marathon a day and eat vast quantities of raw butter!
